Hip problems had Gertrude Boelter in so much pain, she knew she had to do something. So she got on the Internet and started doing research.
"I was impressed at what I found out about Oconomowoc Memorial — it's not some small town hospital. They're a leader in what they do. . . I saw how they had gotten this new equipment, and that there were two doctors in Waukesha that had gone out to California to learn the procedure."
The doctors of whom she speaks — Dr. Scott Schneider and Dr. Matt Bong — were able to perform a bilateral anterior hip replacement with the help of a special surgical table designed for that procedure. And the fact that both hips could be replaced at the same time meant a much faster recovery, and less pain, than previous methods. "The recovery is not bad because they don't have to cut through all the muscles," points out Gertrude. "Plus, with bilateral, you're talking one surgery, one anesthesia, one recovery period."
"A lot of people have made the comment, ‘gee you're brave,' but I didn't really have any qualms about it. And I am so glad I decided to have it done - it's like a new lease on life."
