It is estimated that over 60 million Americans have heartburn symptoms at least once per month. Approximately 25 million Americans have heartburn symptoms daily!
Do you...
- suffer from heartburn 2 or more times a week?
- experience difficulty swallowing?
- have a lump-like feeling in your throat?
- have a dry cough?
- have asthma-like symptoms?
- have a frequent sore throat or hoarseness?
- take over the counter antacids or stomach medications regularly?
If you can answer yes to most of these questions, you may have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). You should discuss these symptoms with your physician.
FEATURED TOPIC: GERD
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition in which the stomach contents (food or liquid) leak backwards from the stomach into the esophagus (the tube from the mouth to the stomach). This action can irritate the esophagus, causing heartburn and other symptoms. This can be caused by a loose opening where the esophagus joins the stomach. A hiatal hernia may also contribute to GERD. Most times these symptoms can be controlled with medications and life style modifications. Untreated, chronic GERD can cause serious complications. Barrett's esophagus can occur when acid damages the lining in the esophagus. If you have had long standing reflux symptoms, discuss with your doctor.
