Skin, Hair & NailsDermatology

Skin is the largest organ in the human body-about 21 square feet on the average adult's body. Skin, hair and nails (which are produced by living skin cells) are important because they:
  • Protect the body from the environment, particularly the sun
  • Prevent excessive water loss from the body
  • Protect the body from infection

The medical specialty that deals with problems of the skin is dermatology.  Dermatologist treats disorders relating to the skin, hair and nails. A dermatologist is a physician who has completed medical school, at least one year of postdoctoral training and three or more years of intensive residency training in dermatology.

ProHealth Care Medical Associates offers dermatologists and physician's assistants. It is important to see a dermatologist because, in addition to the medical aspect of dermatology, untreated problems with the skin can negatively impact a person's social and psychological health.  Fortunately, pharmaceutical and technological advances have greatly improved dermatology outcomes. Please see our dermatologists to find out more.
